CS 6000 RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES: SYLLABUS (Winter 2003) Instructor: Ted Billard Email : ted.billard@csueastbay.edu Phone : 885-3437 Home Page : www.mcs.csueastbay.edu/~billard Class Time: Th 4-6pm Office Hrs: Contact by Email (Sc N216) Summary: This seminar-based course focuses on literature for research in computer science. Students read, analyze, present, discuss, and report on papers in various research domains. There are two main parts of the course: Goal: familiarize students with research papers and discuss in casual setting. 1. instructor gives an example oral presentation of a conference paper 2. read selected papers during class and have general discussion 3. read papers prior to class and divide into smaller groups to discuss/evaluate 4. library resoures will be examined Goal: improve each student's analysis, oral, and writing skills. 1. literature search for two papers in any computer science domain 2. 15-20 minute oral presentation of one paper followed by questions/answers (give a copy of the paper to the instructor one week in advance) 3. 3-4 page typed summary/review of another current paper (turn-in copy of the research paper that is being reviewed) Evaluation criteria for a paper (for all discussions/presentations/reports): 1. point of the paper 2. summary of the contents 3. contribution to the field 4. quality of the technical presentation, technical difficulty 5. strong points 6. weak points 7. open issues Student Requirements: Grade Percentage 1. attend class 10% 2. participate by asking/answering questions 10% 3. read selected papers and participate in group discussion 10% 4. give an oral presentation of a paper 30% 5. write a summary/review of a paper due at Final Exam date (3/20) 40% Text: None.
