Johan Barthold Jongkind was born in Laptrop in Netherlands in 1819. In 1846 he went to Paris and studied with the French artist Eugène Isabey. He developed a technique to illustrate the effects of light by using juxtaposed strokes of unmixed colors. Jongkind painted mainly seascapes but after 1878 until his death in1891, he began to concentrate more and more on the watercolor technique and let his oil paintings take second place.
