Docking practice over New Zealand

Backdropped against the waters of Cook Strait near New Zealand's South Island, Russia's Mir space station is seen from the aft flight deck of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The two spacecraft were in the process of making their third docking in Earth orbit.

Docked to Mir

This view, taken from one of Atlantis’ overhead windows with an electronic still camera (ESC), shows most of the elements of Russia’s Mir space station. The two spacecraft docked some 30 hours earlier, with the two crews of astronauts and cosmonauts greeting and exchanging gifts in the Mir base block module, near foreground. At right edge is the docking module (DM) which was delivered on the previous Atlantis mission.
